Bicycle commuting should be encouraged because it has individual and societal benefits, greater public participation needs to be fostered. This can be accomplished by changing attitudes, increasing safety, and creating walk-able/bicycle friendly patterns for land-use.

In 2008 Barack Obama won the presidency in a landslide victory thru the use of “Social media”. His campaigns use of blogging, wikis, social networks, e-mail advocacy, text messaging, and online video engaged everyday people into empowered volunteers, donors, and advocates for his presidency and created a new form of social government participation across the country. We begin with an exploration into the uses of internet technology and politics. Since the inception of the internet in the early 1990’s political candidates, parties, and organizations have minutely utilized the networking capabilities of this new technology prior to the 2008 election. Second we examine the presidential campaign of Barack Obama. Thru the use of new social media like text messaging, Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube Obama’s campaign harnessed the power of sharing and communicating through multiple web based technologies to engage American voters. Finally, we explore the effects of this new web technology on American politics today. Social media technology has changed the face of public involvement in government creating a wider platform for individual citizen participation.
