Don Quixote Exhibit at the University Library

November 2005 - January 2006

Jesus Alonso-Regalado, Hispanic Studies Bibliographer and exhibit creator, will give a tour of the of Don Quixote exhibit and its significance on Wednesday, January 25th from 4:00-5:00 at the exhibit site on the first floor of the the University Library.



Celebrating 400 Years of Don Quixote de la Mancha, 1605-2005


The University at Albany Library commemorates the 400th anniversary of the publication of El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quixote de La Mancha with an exhibit highlighting selected editions of this masterpiece and its influence on world literature and the arts (fine arts, music, cinema, etc.) Miguel de Cervantes's masterpiece is considered to be the first modern novel in history and one of the most influential on world literature. Authors such as Laurence Sterne, Henry Fielding, Dostoievski, Graham Greene, Kafka, Flaubert, Borges, and Thomas Mann have been inspired by Don Quixote. There have been also many artists who have been influenced by this novel, such as painters (Doré, Goya, Dalí, Chagall, Picasso), film directors (Orson Welles, Terry Gilliam, Gutiérrez Aragón), and musicians (Falla, Telemman, Purcell, Strauss, Joaquín Rodrigo). Gonzalo Torrente Ballester, prominent Spanish novelist and winner of the Cervantes Award (the preeminent Spanish literature prize), was a Distinguished Professor of Spanish Literature at the University at Albany from 1966 to 1970. He was also an outstanding scholar on Spanish literature. In 1975, he published El Quijote Como Juego, in which he conceived the Cervantes novel as a literary game of authors, narrators, and readers.
