UA Libraries Begin the Acquisitions Budget Reduction Process

The University Libraries are about to begin the process of reducing the acquisitions budget by up to $500,000. Frank D’Andraia, Dean and Director of Libraries sent out the following message to all Deans and Directors:

The cost of information continues to increase at a rate faster than the Libraries’ budget. Currently, our costs exceed our ability to pay and a shortfall is expected this year and next. Although the Libraries’ budget for next year is not expected to be identified until May or later, we must notify vendors about renewals by late summer. In order to assure that you and your faculty are consulted on how to achieve the necessary economies, I have asked our bibliographers to begin contacting their assigned departments about reducing spending patterns for next year. The Libraries anticipate that without a budget increase the acquisitions budget shortfall will be $450,000 - $500,000 in FY06-07. We have identified reduction targets for each department according to three tiers. The first reduction target will yield $300,000, the second $400,000 and the third $500,000. The level of reduction we implement will depend upon the new budget.

Thank you in advance for your assistance. Please feel free to contact your bibliographer, Mary Casserly, Assistant Director for Collections and User Services, or me if you have any question or need any additional information.
