New Fund Supports Researchers in Feminist Social Justice

Albany, NY (March 21, 2007)—UAlbany Libraries announce a new fund, to support researchers in the M.E. Grenander Special Collections and Archives. The fund, The Patricia Stocking Brown Fund for Feminist Social Justice Research in University Libraries, was initiated by Women’s Studies Professor Bonnie B. Spanier, Biology Professor Emeritus Stephen C. Brown, and others in recognition of Dr. Patricia Brown’s lifelong commitment to researching and teaching about women and social justice, particularly in her areas of science and medicine.
“The name of the fund is intended to represent the broad scope and intent of ‘feminisms,’ meaning efforts to eliminate all forms of social injustice and inequities,” says Professor Stephen Brown. “We’ve got terrific materials in the archives, and we want to encourage scholars, particularly young scholars, to access these materials.” Brian Keough, head of the Grenander Special Collections and Archives, agrees. “The Department of Special Collections has archive and manuscript material that documents the history of the women and men in New York who have made significant contributions to movements for progressive social change since 1900. This is very rich territory for students and scholars.”

Applications for the award may come from graduate or undergraduate students who wish to use this material for a project (class paper or project; media project; research for dissertation or publication; other use as defined by applicant). Awards may be given twice per year: $100 for an undergraduate student recipient; $500 for a graduate student recipient. The first award(s) will be given in fall 2007. A full description can be found here.

Donors are encouraged to support this fund, in memory of Dr. Patricia Stocking Brown, who died from breast cancer in 2004. A pledge form, including return address information, can be found here.
