UAlbany Libraries Open Two New Endowed Funds
Education and Social Sciences Areas to be Strengthened
ALBANY, NY (June 7, 2007)-- Two new endowed funds have been created for Albany’s University Libraries, one in support of materials in the Social Sciences, the other in support of materials in Education.
According to Library Dean and Director Frank D’Andraia, “These Funds will support two areas that are of great importance to the University at Albany. Both Education and the Social Sciences are our roots as well as significant areas for future study and research. It’s time for us to plan carefully for 21st century students and faculty.” Each fund has a goal of $250,000, to be realized by 2009.
The Libraries’ collections endowments are supported by faculty in various disciplines. Dean Susan Phillips, School of Education, applauded the opportunity to support the fund for materials in education. “It’s part of our proud heritage from the New York State College for Teachers that we are committed to preparing leaders in education—teachers, administrators, and beyond. We are honored to join the Libraries to support and enhance the curriculum in the School of Education.”
Stressing the importance for collaborative fund-raising efforts, Joan Wick-Pelletier, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, supports the Libraries’ endowed funds for a variety of collections: “The College of Arts and Sciences has an investment in the University Libraries’ provision of effective tools used by both students and faculty in their research in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences and mathematics.”
These new endowments bring to a total nine endowments for UAlbany’s Libraries currently open for individual or class gifts. More endowment initiatives will be announced in fall 2007. Gifts to endowment can be made outright (cash), through a living trust, or a bequest in a will, by a paid-up life insurance/retirement plan gift, a real estate donation, or through a plan that gives a return to the donor (charitable gift annuity or a pooled income fund); or through a charitable remainder trust or charitable lead trust.
