Yes. You Can Talk in the University Libraries. Find Out Where. Find Your Zone

Library Zones

Recognizing that not all scholars need quiet all the time, the University Libraries have established color-coded noise-level zones, or clearly designated areas within the University Libraries where one of three noise levels is permitted.

The three noise levels are collaborative (converse in normal tones), quiet (occasional quiet discussion), and silent (strictly for silent study).

To further communication, all areas within all three of the University Libraries--the University Library, the Science Library and the Dewey Graduate Library--are now color-coded either Green, Yellow or Red to visually identify which level of noise is permitted--green for collaborative, yellow for quiet, and red for silent.

Green = Collaborative (converse in normal tones)
Yellow = Quiet (occasional quiet discussion)
Red = Silent (strictly for silent study).

The University Libraries have also placed building maps of Library Zones online (http://library.albany.edu/zones), where the UAlbany community can see how each library has been zoned.
