Therapy Dogs Help You Stress Less

The University Libraries invite all UAlbany students, faculty, and staff to experience a series of fall 2016 events meant to reduce student stress during finals. The kick-off event will be a Therapy Dogs visit on Wednesday, December 7, 1:00 pm–3:00 pm in the garden-level atrium of the Science Library.

The Schenectady Chapter of Therapy Dogs International will be bringing dogs to the Science Library that have been specially trained to comfort people experiencing stress. Therapy dogs are known for their ability to lower stress levels in a variety of educational settings, which is the reason they frequent campuses during exam times. Studies show that therapy dogs rival conventional stress management programs in reducing anxiety, stress, and depression.

"We're very excited to have the therapy dogs back again," says Amanda Lowe, University Libraries Lending & Access Services Associate. "They were here in October for midterms and we had a record turnout."

"The therapy dogs have become a staple in our stress reduction programming," says Dean of University Libraries Rebecca Mugridge. "It is one of my favorite University Libraries' traditions."
