The University Libraries will be celebrating Open Access Week with a full-day event on Thursday, October 26, 9:15 am–3:00 pm, in the Science Library's Patricia and J. Spencer Standish Board Room.

Open Access Week is an annual, global event. Members of the academic and research communities come together to discuss how removing access barriers to scholarly output could transform the way scientific inquiry and research are conducted. In 2017, Open Access Week runs from October 23rd through October 29th.

"By making scholarly materials openly accessible, researchers can facilitate the replication of important experiments, more readily identify collaborators, and break down disciplinary silos of knowledge," says Elaine M. Lasda, Subject Librarian for Social Welfare, Gerontology, and Reference at the Dewey Graduate Library. "Open access to scholarly output can raise the quality of research as well as heighten its impact and influence, not only in academic and research networks, but in society as a whole."

Keynote speakers will be Darren Chase and Shafeek Fazal of the Stony Brook University Libraries, who will share their experiences developing and implementing the Stony Brook University Open Access Policy. Dr. Johan Rooryck, from Leiden University, the Netherlands, will talk about his experience moving from proprietary publishing to open access publishing. Other topics will include Open Educational Resources (OERs) at UAlbany; an update on Scholars Archive, the UAlbany Libraries' open access repository; and a showcase of student work.

The event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided with support from University Auxiliary Services. For more information and to RSVP, visit our Open Access Day event page (http://scholarsarchive.library.albany.edu/open_access_week/).
