Ms. Winifred Kutchukian is a part-time instructional support assistant
assigned to the University Libraries¹ interlibrary borrowing unit where she
provides critical service in coordinating and processing a very large volume
of requests for research materials not available in the University¹s
collection. Winnie is an alumna of UAlbany, and throughout her 18 years with
the Libraries she has served in a variety of roles and functions. Her
colleagues know her as a very dedicated and thoughtful professional who has
well developed customer services abilities and a broad knowledge of
interlibrary loan trends and issues. She works to find solutions, resolve
issues, and strengthen the ability of the Libraries to achieve excellence in
interlibrary loan operations. Her many suggestions for expediting
interlibrary loan requests have enabled the Libraries truly to put global
resources within easy reach of students and faculty in a timely and
expeditious manner. The high quality of her work has directly enhanced the
Libraries reputation for service and as one of the top 100 research
libraries in the U.S. In addition to her notable performance in her core
assignment, Ms. Kutchukian is valued for her service on many committees,
task forces, and special project initiatives. Her talents have particularly
benefited the Libraries Diversity Committee. We take great pride in
recognizing Ms. Winifred Kutchukian as an exemplary member of the
professional staff and one of the 2009 recipients of the President¹s Award
for Excellence in Professional Service.

Brianna Rogers will be the University at Albany Libraries’ third summer visitor this year. Brianna is a second-year undergraduate student at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina, and a participant in The Mellon Librarian Recruitment Program funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Brianna started her internship yesterday in the University Library’s Circulation and Media Services Department. In the near future, she will also be working in the Dewey Graduate Library.

Brianna enjoys baking brownies and chocolate chip cookies and spending time with her black kitty named Princess. Her other hobbies include watching funny movies such as Meet the Parents and listening to music artists, John Legend and Destiny’s Child. Her work experience includes working in the Johnson C. Smith Library as a Student Assistant; serving as a Program Assistant at O.D. Heck; and, assisting shoppers at BJ’s Wholesale Club and Old Navy.

A little bit of information about the Mellon Librarian Recruitment Program…(from http://www.oberlin.edu/library/mellon/ )

The Mellon Librarian Recruitment Program began in June 2003 when Oberlin College received funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The purpose of the Mellon Librarian Recruitment Program is to encourage talented and diverse undergraduates to pursue jobs in libraries.

The program aims to increase the number of librarians available to fill the projected national shortage of librarians due to retirements. Expanding the racial and ethnic diversity of librarians is also an objective of the program. Currently, the percentage of people of color working in libraries is not proportionate to the number of people of color nationally.

Through experience in and multifaceted exposure to library work, students will become aware of the variety of options available to them in this evolving career field.

The following libraries cooperatively participate in the program with Oberlin:

Occidental College

Swarthmore College

Wellesley College

The Robert W. Woodruff Library at the Atlanta University Center

Johnson C. Smith University

Saint Augustine's College

Mellon Foundation Funds Librarian Recruiting Program Coordinated by Oberlin College

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded a new grant in the amount of $500, 000 to continue and expand a cooperative program designed to recruit undergraduates from diverse backgrounds into the library profession. The initiative has involved the libraries of Johnson C. Smith University, Oberlin, Occidental, Saint Augustine’s, Swarthmore and Wellesley colleges, and the Robert W. Woodruff Library of the Atlanta University Center. The project builds on two earlier grants from the Foundation awarded in June 2003 and December 2004 under the project title “Recruiting to the Library Profession.

The program will continue to promote librarianship as a potential career choice for large numbers of undergraduates. The intensive internship opportunities, graduate library school scholarships, and programming about important issues in librarianship remain essential features of the program.

Leadership development will be an integral part of the program. Studies show that a wave of librarians will soon retire from management and leadership positions within the profession, so there is a very strong need to recruit talented individuals who are interested in pursuing leadership positions in libraries. The grant will continue to focus on recruiting students from the four federally-defined minority groups (African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos, and Native Americans), since they remain significantly underrepresented within librarianship.

The grant project will again be directed by Ray English, Director of Libraries at Oberlin. The project coordinator will be Tonya Briggs.

The program consists of:

Internships for undergraduates

Academic library jobs for college graduates

Scholarships for library science graduate program students

Programs that focus on library careers, trends and issues

Internships for undergraduates

Undergraduate students at colleges that participate in the Mellon program may apply for internships that include a course about libraries, what librarians do, and leadership skills. Students also work on projects that give them experience working in libraries.

Academic library jobs for college graduates

College graduates may apply for a full-time, one year position working at a college library in order to gain work experience and exposure to possible careers in librarianship.

The University at Albany Libraries will host two graduate students who are pursuing their MSIS degrees. Arturo Longoria is from the University of Texas at Austin School of Information Science and Sandra Baker Castro is pursuing her MSIS at the University at Albany. Both will complete the ARL (Association of Research Libraries) Career Enhancement Program here from May 18, 2009 – July 25, 2009.

Overview *
The ARL Career Enhancement Program, funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Services and ARL member libraries for 2009, 2010 and 2011, offers MLS graduate students from underrepresented groups an opportunity to jump-start their careers in research libraries by providing a robust fellowship experience in an ARL member library.

This program reflects the commitment of ARL members to provide practical experience to MLS graduate students from underrepresented groups and to create a diverse research library community that will better meet the new challenges of global competition and changing demographics.

How fellows qualify to participate in this program
The ARL Career Enhancement Program was created to provide MLS graduate students from underrepresented groups with an opportunity to jump-start their careers in research libraries by providing real-world practical experience. All applicants must possess the following qualifications:

be a member of an underrepresented group as defined by the US Census Bureau:
American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander

be a degree-seeking MLS student who has completed a minimum of 12 credit hours by June 1, 2009, and whose graduation date is after the completion of the fellowship (Applicants who will graduate before completing the fellowship or who have earned an MLS degree prior to the application deadline will not be accepted.)

have a genuine interest in pursuing a career in research libraries

Fellowship Experience & Overview
An ARL Career Enhancement Program Fellow will have a unique opportunity to create a meaningful, practical experience in an ARL library. Each fellow is matched with a host institution-based on interest and availability-that can best provide a rich and rewarding fellowship experience.

In the Career Enhancement Program, each fellow will experience:

a six- to twelve-week internship experience in an ARL library;

a stipend and funding for housing,

travel and tuition for career-related study;

an opportunity to work with other LIS MLS graduate students in a cohort environment (up to three fellows can be assigned to the same institution);

academic credit for the practical experience (fellow is responsible for arranging this program component with their home institution);

a mentoring (mentors at host institutions receive special training) relationship with a professional librarian while on campus for the fellowship.

Host Institutions & Matching
The ARL member libraries listed below have agreed to provide each fellow with a rewarding fellowship experience. Not all applicants are accepted in the rigorous selection process. Those who are accepted into the program will be matched with a host institution based on:

interest - each fellow is asked to write about their interests in the application essay, and

timing - each fellow is asked to designate which semester they are interested in completing the fellowship
(spring, summer, fall).

In order to provide each fellow with a rich experience, the review committee, composed of representatives from each host institution, will match fellows based on the best combination of the aforementioned elements. Fellows are asked to be flexible and willing to participate in the program based on the committee's matching, not the fellow's institutional interest.

The host institutions are: University at Albany (SUNY), University of Arizona, University of California (San Diego), Columbia University, University of Kentucky, National Library of Medicine, North Carolina State University, University of Washington.

The Department of Special Collections announces the completion of the John H. E. Fried Papers online finding aid, part of the German and Jewish Intellectual Émigré Collections. The John H. E. Fried Papers consist of 40 cubic feet of materials and includes his professional correspondence, copies of his published and unpublished writings (manuscripts, typescripts, reprints and books), texts of numerous speeches and lectures (published and unpublished), personal documents, teaching materials, as well as Fried's research collections on topics relating to global human rights problems and remedies.

Fried, a lawyer, professor and human rights activist, came to the United States in 1938 from Vienna, Austria shortly after its annexation by Hitler. In March 1947, Fried was asked to remain in Nuremberg as Special Legal Consultant to the U.S. Judges at the trials, to advise on questions relating to all aspects of the law of war and war crimes, crimes against humanity and crimes against peace, as well as many other questions of international law. The proceedings of the 12 trials were published in 14 volumes, Trials of War Criminals before the Nuremberg Military Tribunals. His work in this area spanned more than four decades, from his service as Consultant to the Nuremberg judges through his later membership on the Lawyers Committee on Nuclear Policy, and includes his time at the International Labour Organization in Montreal, Canada, as well as his affiliations with the United Nations, working as a legal consultant to the governments of Somalia and Nepal.
