The University Libraries are pleased to announce the acquisition of the Readers’ Guide Retrospective database. This purchase was made with funds from the Libraries’ 2007-2008 Selective Investment Award.
This retrospective database includes the entire content of the Reader’s Guide to Periodical Literature from 1890-1982, which indexes subjects in the popular press. Users can search nearly 3 million articles from 375 leading magazines. The database includes both original and updated subject headings.
Access is available from the Databases & Indexes page of the University Libraries Web site. Enter “Readers’ Guide” in the box labeled “The database I’m looking for is” or click on the letter “R.”
The University Libraries are pleased to announce the acquisition of the digital archives of The New York Times through ProQuest Historical Newspapers. This valuable research tool, which covers 150 years of American history, was purchased with funds from the Libraries’ 2007-2008 Selective Investment Award.
The database contains the complete paper from 1851-2004, cover-to-cover, with full-page and article images in pdf format. Annually, one year of content will be added to the file. Users can search 21 different article types, including news, editorials, letters to the editor, obituaries, birth and marriage announcements, stock photos, advertisements, and more. Articles appear with all graphics and continuations from other pages. Users can view the image of an entire page or scan individual issues by page.
Access is available from the Databases & Indexes page of the University Libraries Web site. Enter “New York Times” in the box labeled “The database I’m looking for is.”
In an effort to improve service to our users, the University Libraries have made a change in the OpenURL link resolver used for searching for full-text items in databases and journals. When you perform a search in one of the library databases, such as Ebsco Academic Search Premier, instead of the SFX button, you will see a button labeled "Find It" next to each article citation. Clicking on this button will provide users with any full-text options for the article.
In Minerva, the University Libraries online catalog, the full view record contains the "Find It" button. If you are searching for a particular journal, the "Find It" button will provide full-text options for the journal.

Access to Safari Tech Books Online http://proquest.safaribooksonline.com/ is now available for the University at Albany community. Safari Tech Books Online is a joint venture of O'Reilly Media and The Person Technology Group. Our collection contains about 150 online books on a variety of computing, programming, and information technology subjects from publishers like O'Reilly, Addison Wesley, Sams, Prentice Hall, Que, Microsoft Press, and Peachpit Press. Our collection can be searched on the Safari Web site http://proquest.safaribooksonline.com/ by selecting "my content" in the search area, or individual books can be accessed using Minerva.
The University Libraries is hosting a trial for Safari Tech Books. Safari Tech Books is joint venture of O'Reilly Media and the Pearson Technology Group. These two publishers account for over half of all IT books published. The collection contains over 3,700 titles from over 20 imprints such as O'Reilly, Addison Wesley, New Riders, Prentice Hall, and Sams. It covers some of the latest technologies like Java, Web development, enterprise computing, and XML.

IUE-CWA Local 301's publications for 1939-1962 are now available in PDF format through the finding aid for the collection available at http://library.albany.edu/speccoll/findaids/apap023.htm. Local 301 has been representing workers at General Electric’s Schenectady facility since 1936. The newspaper is the only consistent source for information prior to the 1960s and provides background for any history of Local 301. Local 301’s publications from 1962-1990 as well as 7 reels of microfilm, 32 audio and video recordings, and over 10 cubic feet of records are available in the M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives
The digitization of the Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA) newsletters was begun with the support of CSEA with issues of The Civil Service Leader from the years 1946-1947 and 1950-1953 currently available in PDF format through the finding aid for the collection, which is available at http://library.albany.edu/speccoll/findaids/apap015.htm. The digitization of the CSEA’s newsletters is an ongoing project and eventually issues from 1944-1989 of The Civil Service Leader and its successor The Public Sector will be available online. Also, over 700 images documenting labor from the early 20th century to the present from the records of CSEA are also available online. A link to the CSEA images in the University at Albany Libraries’ Digital Collections database is also available at http://library.albany.edu/speccoll/findaids/apap015.htm. The Civil Service Employees Association, Inc., or CSEA, is the largest public employees' union in New York State with over 260,000 members. CSEA began in Albany, New York, in 1910 as a collective effort by a handful of state employees to earn better wages and working conditions.
Over 4,000 images from the records of United University Professions (UUP) are also available online thanks to the support of UUP. A link to the UUP images in the University at Albany Libraries’ Digital Collections database is available at http://library.albany.edu/speccoll/findaids/apap039.htm. UUP was created in 1973 and is the union representing more than 32,000 academic and professional faculty on 29 State University of New York campuses, plus System Administration, Empire State College, and the New York State Theatre Institute. UUP’s records in the M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives total over 160 cubic feet.

The World e-Book Fair (worldebookfair.com), sponsored by Project Gutenberg and World eBook Library, will be offering up to 300,000 books online from July 4 to August 4, 2006. Fiction, nonfiction and reference books plus classical music scores and recordings will be available for free downloading.
In an interview with The Boston Globe, Project Gutenberg’s Michael Hart said, "It will include the oldest books in the world, including every author you have heard of in your life, other than current ones." About 100,000 books will remain permanently on the site. E-Book fairs with up to one million selections are planned for future years.
New finding aids published for archival and manuscript collections in the M.E. Some of the most recent finding aids are for the collections of Reinhard Bendix, Gerhard Colm, Julius V. Wyler, Adolph Lowe, the Capital Area School Development Association, Environmental Clearinghouse, Inc. (ECOS), Schoharie Land Trust, and the Nelson A. Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy Dean’s Office. These recent additions include the personal papers of German and Jewish Émigrés, organizations active in environmental affairs, and University at Albany academic departments.

The EBSCO-hosted database American Humanities Index has been replaced by Humanities International Index. This database provides citation information for articles, essays and reviews in literary, scholarly and creative journals published in the United States and Canada.

In January 2006, Information Science and Technology Abstracts Plus database will no longer be available. However, the new Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISTA) database, from EBSCO, covers much of the same content as well as providing more coverage of library literature. The LISTA database indexes and abstracts resources on librarianship, classification, cataloging, bibliometrics, online information retrieval, information management, and the information industry. LISTA indexes more than 600 periodicals plus books, research reports, and proceedings.
PAIS, the Public Affairs Information Service, is now available through Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (CSA). Previously, this database was available through SilverPlatter.
PAIS International provides references to books, journal articles, government documents, and privately published research reports on almost any topic that has a public affairs dimension. It is international in coverage. Coverage begins in 1972, while the PAIS Archive extends coverage back to 1915. Both titles are now available from the same interface.
