Macaulay Library: Sound and Video Catalog

From the Macaulay Library of Cornell's Lab of Ornithology, the Sound and Video Catalog provides access to the world's largest natural sound and video archive of animal behavior. Although birds are favored, many other animals are covered. The site is fully searchable.

Chemistry Dictionary for Word Processors, V. 2.0

The Chemistry Dictionary for Word Processors is a chemistry dictionary that can be downloaded and used with Microsoft Office (Windows or Mac) or Open Office (Windows or Linux). It contains approximately 104,000 words. The dictionary was created by Adam Azman (Ph.D. candidate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) and is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License.

SciFinder has the Largest Collection of Proton NMR Spectra

Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) announced that SciFinder Scholar now contains the largest collection of predicted proton NMR spectra (also called 1H-NMR). SciFinder Scholar users can access more than 23,800,000 spectra. These spectra augment the 1.9 billion predicted and experimental properties already available. The proton NMR spectra is being made available through an agreement between CAS and ACD/Labs.

Science Library will be Closed

As part of the University Energy Savings Initiative, the Science Library will be closed December 20, 2008 through January 4, 2009. When the Science Library reopens at 8 AM on January 5, 2009, it will be heated to 63 to 65 degrees F, hot water will be available, and interior lighting will be turned on as needed. The Science Library will return to normal conditions on January 20, 2009.

While it is closed, materials from the Science Library will be paged. Please use UA Delivery to request materials. Book requests will be paged and held at the University Library for you to pick up. Journal articles will be scanned, and made available electronically.

There will be no interruption to Interlibrary Loan and UA Delivery electronic article delivery services during this period. However, due to seasonal shutdowns in many research libraries, ILL article turnaround time may in some cases be slower than normal.

New Journal of Physics Celebrates 10th anniversary

New Journal of Physics celebrates its 10th anniversary. For the past 10 years, NJP has been providing permanently free access to peer-reviewed research covering all areas of physics. During this time, over 1,500 articles have been published, and there have been over 2,000,000 downloads. More interesting facts and figures about NJP are available here and here.

Physical Review Focus

From the American Physical Society (APS), Physical Review Focus is a free online resource that provides brief articles based on selected research papers from the Physical Review family of journals. The articles are written so they are accessible to students as well as researchers from all fields of physics. Videos and links to the original article are also included.

ticTOCs: Journal Tables of Contents Service

ticTOCs: Journal Tables of Contents Service is a table of contents service developed by a consortium of United Kingdom universities and information providers. ticTOCs is free and covers over 11,000 journals from over 400 publishers. Tables of contents can be accessed by searching by journal title; links are provided to the full text. Users can also register and use MyTOCs to create and permanently save a set of journals titles for future use. It is also possible to export TOC RSS feeds to feedreaders.

40 Millionth Substance is Registered by CAS

On November 21, 2008, Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) registered its 40 millionth substance. The substance is an azulenobenzofuran derivative, and it was assigned the CAS registry number 1073662-18-6. It was described in the journal article:

Oh, C.H.; Lee, J.H.; Lee, S.J.; Kim, J.I.; Hong, C.S. Intramolecular Huisgen-Type Cyclization of Platinum-Bound Pyrylium Ions with Alkenes and Subsequent Insertion into a Benzylic C-H Bond. Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2008, 47, 7505-7507.

The CAS registry system is world's largest and most authoritative collection of disclosed chemical substance information, and is available via SciFinder Scholar.

Chemical Abstract Service has produced a series of podcasts that relate chemistry and scientific discovery to SciFinder. The latest podcast, "From Fairy Gloves to Nanocrystals: How a Folk Remedy Became One of the Greatest Drug Discoveries," explores "the history of the foxglove, from its earliest development and uses of its extract Digitoxin, to research done in modern times." [UAlbany SciFinder Scholar users should note that this podcast uses the Web-based SciFinder. We will be migrating to the Web-based SciFinder in 2009.]

Decoder for Biochimica et Biopysica Acta

ScienceDirect divides Biochimica et Biopysica Acta (BBA) by section, not by sequential volume number. There are 25 sections of BBA. Developed at the Oregon Health & Science University Library, the BBA Decoder can be used when the volume is known, but the section is not known. When the section is know, the UAlbany community should use the journal listing in the Minerva catalog to gain access.

The American Chemical Society has initiated a free social networking Website for ACS members and student affiliates. Called ACS Network, its purpose is to facilitate scientific collaboration among chemists around the world. Over 15,000 chemists have registered.

SciFinder Scholar Enhancements

From SciFinder Solutions:

CAS databases, the world's largest and most comprehensive collection of disclosed chemistry-related information, have recently been updated with the following key enhancements:

176,000 experimental spectra have been added to CAS REGISTRYSM - this includes 90,000 proton NMR spectra, 15,000 carbon-13 spectra, and 71,000 mass spectra. CAS REGISTRY now includes more than 480,000 experimental spectra.

CAS databases now contain more than 200 million cited references.

More than 163,000 exemplified prophetic substances (from the example section of all English, French, and German language basic patents) from over 1,700 published patents have been added to CAS databases.

CASREACT has recently surpassed 15 million single- and multi-step reactions and coverage has been extended to include prophetic reactions.

South Korean patent data is now current through February 2008.

Japanese (JPO), Chinese (SIPO), and South Korean (KIPO) utility models are now being added to the CAS databases. By the end of this year, a backfile from the beginning of 2006 will be included in the CAS databases.

CAS databases have been enhanced with approximately 3,500 World Traditional Medicine (WTM) Chinese patents, bringing the total to 13,500 WTM patents.

Mexican patents through the end of 2007 have been added to CAS databases.

Over 1 million 10-digit CAS Registry Number identifiers have been assigned to newly registered chemicals.

It covers "all aspects of the chemical sciences relating to energy conversion and storage, alternative fuel technologies, and environmental science." Although the University at Albany does not have a subscription to Energy & Environmental Science, our institutional subscription to other RSC journals allows free access during 2008 and 2009. The first issue is now available.
