Fiesers' Reagents for Organic Synthesis

First published in 1967, Fiesers' Reagents for Organic Synthesis has become an essential resource for organic chemistry. Currently, there are 22 volumes. The reagents are arranged alphabetically in each volume, which also includes author and subject indexes. Most entries include a description, synthetic examples, citations to information in earlier volumes, and references to more details. Compiled by Michael B. Smith (University of Connecticut), Wiley-Interscience recently published a Collective Index for Volumes 1-22. It builds upon an earlier index to volumes 1-12 and contains the following indexes: reagents index by name, reagents index by element, type of reaction index, index of synthetic targets, index of natural product targets, author index, and subject index. Over the years the title of this set has changed, but it can be found in the Science Library circulating collection at QD 262 F5. The Library has all volumes and both indexes.

Guide to Reference and Information Sources in Plant Biology

The third edition of the Guide to Reference and Information Sources in Plant Biology is now available. After an introduction to the literature of plant biology and a chapter on general sources, the remaining chapters cover resources by topics including: history and biography; plant evolution and paleobotany; ethnobotany; ecology; anatomy, morphology, and development; genetics, molecular biology, and biotechnology; plant physiology and phytochemistry; and systematics and identification. Print and electronic resources, books, journals, and Web sites are covered. The authors maintain an assoicated Web site to keep the URLs up-to-date, which also appears to include most of the resources in the book. A detailed index provides access to the contents. The Guide is available in the Science Library reference section at Science REF QK 45.2 Z999 S35 2006.

Citation Advantage of Open Access Articles

“Citation Advantage of Open Access Articles,? an article by Gunther Eysenbach published in the May 2006 issue of PLoS Biology, finds that articles published as an immediate open access (OA) article on a top journal site have higher impact than self-archived or otherwise openly accessible OA articles. The article finds strong evidence that, even in a journal that is widely available in research libraries, OA articles are more immediately recognized and cited by peers than non-OA articles published in the same journal. It concludes that OA is likely to benefit science by accelerating dissemination and uptake of research findings. From SPARC eNews.

The Sciences at the University at Albany, 1845-2006

The Sciences at the University at Albany, 1845-2006 is currently on exhibit in the lobby of the Science Library.

The exhibit contains items from the University Archives as well as contributions from current faculty members. A small number of items and information from the exhibit are made available online at http://library.albany.edu/speccoll/sciences/ as an introduction to the physical exhibit.

The exhibit examines the growth of and changes in science education and research at the University at Albany over its long history through publications, photographs, class notes, memorabilia, and other records documenting University students, faculty, departments, and research centers.

I would like to thank science faculty member who loaned us research covers for the exhibit.
