Chemistry Central

Chemistry Central is a sub-set of BioMed Central. It features articles from journals that are peer-reviewed and open access. Initially, Chemistry Central is offering articles from:

Beilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry
BMC Biochemistry
BMC Chemical Biology
BMC Structural Biology
Geochemical Transactions

Chemistry Central plans to offer additional journals in the future.

Encyclopedic Dictionary of Condensed Matter Physics

The Encyclopedic Dictionary of Condensed Matter Physics is a 2-volume set that is a translation and revision of the Russian version by Baryahktar. It contains over 4,300 entries, written by more than 700 contributors. Generally, the entries are less than a page in length. Coverage includes experimental and theoretical aspects of condensed matter physics, and contains topics such as crystallography, electrical properties, fluids, magnetism, material properties, optics, radiation, semiconductors, and superconductivity. There is an extensive cross-reference system and a comprehensive subject index. It can be found in the Science Library Reference section at Science REF QC 176 A3 F5913 2004.

Nanoscale Research Letters

Springer publishes a new open access journal, Nanoscale Research Letters. The announcement states, " [it] provides open communication on the broad range of nanoscale science, emphasizing the underlying science and fundamental behavior of nanostructures." Several articles are already available. There is no open access fee for submissions received in 2006.

Wiley Announces Open Access Initiative

Publisher John Wiley & Sons announces a new open access initiative referred to as "funded access." Under this program, journal article authors will have the option of paying a fee to ensure that their article is available to non-subscribers upon publication. Wiley developed this program "for those authors who want to publish in a Wiley journal, and whose funding agency requires deposit in an archive." Initially, "funded access" covers 45 biomedical journals and the fee is $3,000. American Physical Society Announces OA Initiative

The American Physical Society (APS) announces a new Open Access (OA) initiative, Free to Read. It will be available in September 2006 and can applied to any article published by APS back to 1893. Authors, institutions, or readers can pay a one-time fee to make an article freely available. Initially, the fee will be $975 for articles in Physical Review A-E and $1300 for letters in Physical Review Letters. Articles in Reviews of Modern Physics will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Oxford University Press Offers Hybrid Open Access

Oxford University Press launches a hybrid open access system. Authors can now choose to make their papers available immediately after publication by selecting the open access option and paying a publication fee. BioOne Launches Forward Linking

BioOne announces the launch of a new expanded service called forward linking. Forward linking provides a link to articles, published after the article currently being read, that have cited the article. It is similar to a cited author searches in Science Citation Index. It links to articles both within BioOne as well as articles elsewhere. The link to these articles is available by clicking on See Articles Citing This Article in the contents box on the right-hand side of the article text screen.

ScienceDirect Redesign

Elsevier announces that ScienceDirect will receive an interface redesign over the next few leases beginning with the release that will take place this month (August 2006). The redesign is supposed improve navigation, contain a quick search feature, and enable customization and personalization. This is a follow-up to my last blog entry. The O'Reilly Open Books Project contains freely available computing books. Books that are out of print as well as in print are included. There are even O'Reilly books with 2006 copyright dates.

Electronic Book of the Month

Web Client Programming with Perl by Clinton Wong has been selected as the Electronic Book of the Month for August. This title is published by O'Reilly and is one of several that are currently out of print, but being made freely available as part of their Open Books Project. The Electronic Book of the Month Archive has been updated.
