MedPhyt

Developed and funded by the Beilstein Institute and the Institute for Information Technology at the University Klagenfurt (Austria), MedPhyt is a database containing information about plants of medicinal and pharmaceutical interest. Initially, it will contain data on European plants. Plants from other continents will be added later. MedPhyt is freely available, but registration is required. English and German versions are available.

Editorial Board of Topology Resigns

According to "Today’s News" (October 27, 2006) in the Chronicle of Higher Education, “the entire editorial board of the prestigious mathematics journal Topology has resigned to protest the pricing policies of the journal's publisher, Elsevier, a giant European editorial company.��?

Science Magazine Update

On Thursday, October 19, 2006, it was announced on this blog that our online access to Science magazine was curtailed. The University Libraries will be purchasing a site-wide subscription, which will provide online access to the campus. When it becomes available, an announcement will be made on this blog.

The Complete Work of Charles Darwin Online

The Complete Work of Charles Darwin Online contains the major works of the English naturalist. It is the largest collection of his work ever assembled, and includes searchable text pages and images of both publications and handwritten manuscripts. Descriptions of Darwin's Beagle specimens are included along with first editions of Journal of Researches (1839), The Descent of Man (1871), The Zoology of the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle (1838-43), and the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th editions of the Origin of Species. Additional materials will be forthcoming.

Science Magazine

Online access to Science magazine via the journal's Web site has been curtailed because the publisher (AAAS) no longer allows subscription access to individual workstations. They now require a site-wide subscription, which is under consideration. Online access to the backfile of Science is still possible. JSTOR provides access to 1880-2000. (JSTOR has a 5 year moving wall, so in 2007, the 2001 issues of Science will be added.) Ebsco Academic Search Premier provides access to 1997-2004. Don't forget the print version; the Science Library has Science magazine from 1908 forward, including the current issues.

Journals of the London Mathematical Society

Beginning in January 2007, Oxford Journals will publish the journals of the London Mathematical Society: Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society, Journal of the London Mathematical Society, and Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society. These journals cover a "broad spectrum of mathematics, including pure mathematics, as well as more applied areas of analysis, mathematical physics, theoretical computer science, probability, and statistics." Once Oxford Journals takes over, there will be access to the complete electronic archive of papers, which dates back to 1865.

MAP: Mouse Atlas Project

Available from UCLA, the goal of the Mouse Atlas Project (MAP) is "to develop a dynamic, probabilistic atlas of the adult and developing C57BL/6J mouse. Users can import their own data into the atlas and use the same tools to visualize, compare and measure domains of gene expression in normal, gene-targeted knock-out, or transgenic mice."

Electronic Book of the Month

Functional Molecular Nanostructures has been selected as the Electronic Book of the Month for October. This title is part of the Topics in Current Chemistry series published by Springer. Most of the books in this series, published during the last few years, are available online. The Electronic Book of the Month Archive has been updated.

SQL Quiz

The goal of SQL Quiz is to help students improve their SQL and database understanding by testing their knowledge. Each SQL quiz consists of 15 questions randomly selected from a pool of over 500 questions. When the quiz is completed, SQL Quiz generates a grading sheet that includes the question, the student's answer, whether or not the student was correct, and recommended readings for incorrect answers.

SIAM Online Journals

All of the journals published by SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) are available on their Online Journals Web site. The journal titles are Multiscale Modeling & Simulation, SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems, SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics, SIAM Journal on Computing, SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications, SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, SIAM Journal on Optimization, SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing, SIAM Review, and Theory of Probability and Its Applications. Online access for all of the journals goes back to 1997.

International Journal of Biomedical Sciences

The World Enformatika Society launches open access journal: International Journal of Biomedical Sciences. It is is a "refereed journal for scientific papers dealing with any area of biomedical sciences research." The first two issues and a part of a third issue are currently available.

The Encyclopedia of Earth

The Encyclopedia of Earth is a "new electronic resource about the Earth, its natural environments, and their interaction with society. It is a free, fully searchable collection of articles written by scholars, professionals, educators, and experts who collaborate and review each other's work. The articles are written in non-technical language and will be useful to students, educators, scholars, professionals, as well as to the general public." Althougt the Encyclopedia is a wiki, all content is reviewed and approved by editors prior to being published.

Computing Reviews

Computing Reviews is freely available through the end of October. Jointly published by the ACM and reviews.com, Computing Reviews provides reviews of selected books and articles across all disciplines of computing. It is updated daily and includes a 20 year-plus archive.

Chemical Information Sources (CIS) Wiki

CIS Wiki is guide and tutorial about reference materials related to chemistry. It is based on the lecture notes for a course taught by Gary Wiggins at Indiana University as well as the text he authored, Chemical Information Sources [Science QD 8.5 W54 1991]. As a Wiki, "it is intended to be an open source work, to which anyone with the knowledge and desire to improve it can contribute."

Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Offers Open Access

The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) offers a new open access publishing model called Open Science. Starting this month authors will have the option of paying a fee in exchange for making their accepted research paper openly available on the Web. In addition, authors who have published their work in RSC journals will be able to pay the fee and make their article freely available. The fees for  2007 are: communications - £1000; primary paper - £1600; review - £2500. A 15% discount will be applied to fees for authors who are RSC members, or are a member of a society which owns or co-owns the journal in which they are publishing, and to those whose institution subscribes to RSC journal packages A or B.
