National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) Digital Image Library

The NBII Digital Image Library contains a diverse collection of images related to nature and the environment, mainly focusing on plant and animal species, scenic landscapes, wildlife management, and biological study/fieldwork. The Digital Image Library may be browsed by broad subject categories or searched for specific images.

Encyclopedia of Medical Devices and Instrumentation

The six-volume Encyclopedia of Medical Devices and Instrumentation is a comprehensive resource on biomedical instrumentation. It covers a wide range of subjects including articles on topics like audiometry, biomaterials, biomechanics, assistive technology, artificial blood, computed tomography, computer-assisted diagnosis, electrophoresis, engineered tissue, glucose sensors, medical physics, neonatal monitoring, nuclear medicine, optical tweezers, radiation therapy, spinal implants, and x-ray equipment. The articles are alphabetically arranged and include cross references and bibliographies. There is an extensive subject index in volume 6. The set can be found in the Science Library at Science REF R 856 A3 E53 2006.

Encyclopedia of Data Warehousing and Mining

Data warehousing is the study of managing large sets of data; data mining studies large data sets, looking for emerging and hidden patterns that may predict behavior. The Encyclopedia of Data Warehousing and Mining contains over 200 state-of-the-art reports on concepts, issues, and challenges of these fields. The reports are generally 4 to 6 pages in length and include introductory and background information, the main trust, future trends, a conclusion, a list of references, and key terminology. The reports are in alphabetical order, but there is no index to the information in the reports, only an index to the key terms. The Encyclopedia can be found in the Science Library reference section at QA 76.9 D37 E52 2006 [V. 1 and V.2].

NUMDAM

NUMDAM (NUMérisation de Documents Anciens Mathématiques) is a project that is focusing on the retrodigitization of mathematics serials published in France. The list of titles that have been retrodigitized and available online is very impressive. Many have been cataloged in the Minerva catalog; the remaining titles will be cataloged during the next few months.

Glossary of Biotechnology and Nanobiotechnology Terms

The new fourth edition of this dictionary not only covers biotechnology, but also includes the addition of nanobiotechnology terms. The definitions are concise and are written for the the non-specialist. There are numerous cross-references throughout the book. The Glossary of Biotechnology and Nanobiotechnology Terms can be found in the Science Library reference section at TP 248.16 F54 2006.

Encyclopedia of Sexually Transmitted Diseases

This encyclopedia contains information on sexually transmitted diseases and allied subjects. The entries on the STDs are generally five to ten pages in length and include etiology, epidemiology, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, risk factors, and precautions. Most other entries are shorter. There is a listing resources, and a subject index. The Encyclopedia of Sexually Transmitted Diseases is available in the Science Library reference section at RC 200.1 M66 2005.

IUPAC Compendium of Chemical Terminology

Also know as the Gold Book, the IUPAC Compendium of Chemical Terminology is compiled by international committees of experts, and is ratified by IUPAC's Interdivisional Committee on Nomenclature and Symbols. It contains over 6,500 entries from primary specifications. The 1997 edition of the Gold Book is available at

Electronic Book of the Month

Ferroelectric Thin Films: Basic Properties and Device Physics for Memory Applications has been selected as the Electronic Book of the Month for November. This title is part of the Topics in Applied Physics series published by Springer. Most of the books in this series, published during the last few years, are available online. The Electronic Book of the Month Archive has been updated.

Science Magazine

The University Libraries has purchased a site-wide subscription to Science magazine. This subscription provides online access from 1997 forward from any location on campus, and off campus by authentication. To access articles prior to 1997, check the Minerva record for Science.

European Physical Journal Goes Open Access

The publishing consortium of the European Physical Journal has begun offering open access for papers that have been accepted for publication. Authors must select this option, and make an upfront payment. Open access articles will be "perpetually, universally and freely accessible," and the author is entitled to keep the copyright. Furthermore, the letters in EPJ A and C will be available via open access without any fee.
