Biographical Sources in the Sciences

From the Library of Congress, Biographical Sources in the Sciences: General Works and National Sources is a revision of LC Science Tracer Bullet 88-3. It "offers a systematic approach to the wide variety of published biographical information on men and women of science and technology. Both historical and contemporary scientists are covered, with emphasis on Americans."

Making the Right Moves: A Practical Guide to Scientific Management for Postdocs and New Faculty

Now in its second edition, Making the Right Moves: A Practical Guide to Scientific Management for Postdocs and New Faculty is based on courses given at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. It contains a "collection of practical advice and experiences from seasoned investigators. The new edition includes chapters on laboratory leadership, project management, and teaching and course design."

More Concurrent Users for SciFinder Scholar

Beginning March 5, 2007, Chemical Abstracts Service will increase the number of concurrent users (seats) for SciFinder Scholar from 3 to 4. This should decrease the number of SciFinder Scholar turnaways. The increase in seats comes with no additional cost to the University.

Micropaleontology on BioOne

Micropaleontology, published by MicroPress, has formally suspended delivery of current content to BioOne, beginning with vol. 51, no. 2, 2005. Volumes 48-51 (2002-2005) of Micropaleontology will remain on BioOne.

ScienceDirect to Launch Two New Cell Press Titles

According to the ScienceDirect Connect newsletter for January/February 2007, ScienceDirect will be launching two new Cell Press titles in 2007: Cell Host & Microbe (available March 14, 2007) and Cell Stem Cell (available from June 6, 2007). Update: After an initial period of free availability, these titles will not be part of our ScienceDirect subscription, unless we enter a separate subscription.

Chemical Abstracts Service Centennial

David Flaxbart (chemistry librarian, University of Texas at Austin) recently published an excellent piece on the Chemical Abstracts Service centennial in Issues in Science and Technology Librarianship; it is entitled "The Chemical Abstracts Centennial: Whither CAS?" He traces the recent history of CAS and SciFinder Scholar, and makes several insightful suggestions on how CAS can imporve SciFinder Scholar.

Wired (Magazine)

The mision of Wired is to "uncover the most surprising and resonant stories about the people, companies, technologies, and ideas that are transforming our lives." Wired began publishing in 1993, and the entire archive is freely available on the Web including the lastest issues. The archive is searchable.

Fishes of the World

Joseph S. Nelson's Fishes of the World has been revised and is now available in its fourth edition. The goal of this book is "to present a modern introductory systematic treatment of all major fish groups, both fossil and living." It is a "guide and reference to the classification of fishes." Most levels of the systematic hierarchy are described, and there are illustrations for most families. Fishes of the World is available in the reference section of the Science Library at QL 618 N4 2006. Older editions of this book are available in the Science Library circulating book collection.

The Library is now providing access to the Institute of Physics journal Physics in Medicine and Biology. Access includes the current issues as well as the backfile beginning with vol. 1, 1956.

London Mathematical Society Journals

The online distribution for the London Mathematical Society journals has switched from Cambridge University Press to Oxford University Press. This change includes is a significant addition of online content for the three journals:

Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society (1969-1996)
Journal of the London Mathematical Society (1926-1993)
Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society (1865-1996).

Clickable Math

The IEEE Computer Society Digital Library now features clickable math for all documents in HTML format. Click on any mathematical equation, and a small window will pop up with the math in TeX format. The math can now be copied and pasted into another document.

Project Prospect from RSC Publishing

Project Prospect is now available from RSC (Royal Society of Chemistry) Publishing. The goal of Project Prospect is to move toward the semantic web by enhancing RSC's journal articles so they can be read, indexed, and searched by machine. Human "readers will be able to click on named compounds and scientific concepts in the HTML version of an electronic journal article to download structures, understand topics, or link through to electronic databases; compounds and ontology terms will be published as RSS feeds enabling automated discovery of relevant research." Currently, over 100 articles from the 2007 issues have been enhanced by Project Prospect; this number will grow.
