SciFinder Scholar Enhancements

The CAS databases, which the UAlbany Community can access via SciFinder Scholar, have recently been enhanced wtih the following:

  • Indian patent applications from the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs, and Trade Marks have been added. Coverage is retroactive to December 4, 2004.
  • Bibliographic and abstract information has been added for 14,500 additional U.S. patent records from 1870-1889.
  • More than 270,000 additional reactions from more than 17,000 documents from 1992-1999 have been added .
  • More than 1.2 million new commercial source records have been added. These include approximately 500,000 new small molecules.
  • The New Zealand Inventory of Chemicals (NZIoC) is a list of chemicals that may be used as components in formulated products, manufactured in, or imported into New Zealand. All non-confidential NZIoC substances are now included. These substances are identified with On NZIoC in the Inventory Status field.

ChemBioGrid: Chemistry Databases on the Web

From the Chemical Informatics and Cyberinfrastructure Collaboratory (CICC) at Indiana University, ChemBioGrid: Chemistry Databases on the Web lists and describes many major chemistry and biology databases and resources on the Web. It is classified into these categories: general; 2D structure; specific classes of compounds; drug-related; disease-related; physical properties, spectra, etc.; toxcity and environmental; biomolecules; metabolic pathways; Web services-enabled biosciences; commercial; and miscellaneous. There is also an alphabetical list of databases (resources) that is annotated.

∑quPlus: Science and Math Equations

∑quPlus lists important equations in mathematics and science in the following categories: algebra, calculus, chemistry, geometry, physics, signal processing, statistics, and trigonometry. The equations are available as an image, and in LaTeX and MathType formats.

Biointerphases

Biointerphases is a new open access journal published by the American Vacuum Society and hosted on AIP's Scitation platform. "Biointerphases will include all topics relevant to the study and understanding of interfaces and confined phases in biomaterial science and biophysics." It will publish "original articles, reviews, a 'myth and reality' section addressing controversial models and experiments, editorial commentarly, letters to the editor, perspectives on evolving research, reports on interdisciplinary research programs, and opinionated essays." There is a general author a fee of $800, but reduced rates are available. For additional author information, please see http://www.biointerphases.org/author.html.

Chemistry Central Journal

The Chemistry Central Journal is a new online open access initiative of BioMed Central and Chemistry Central. It is both peer-reviewed and open access. "Chemistry Central supports PubMed Central and other digital repositories, and encourages self-archiving by authors. All research articles published by, or in cooperation with, Chemistry Central are archived without delay in PubMed Central and several other international archives. Chemistry Central also allows authors to immediately deposit the official, final version of their published article in any suitable digital repository. Several institutions that are research funders have introduced official policies requesting or requiring their authors to deposit the articles they publish in a central archive. Chemistry Central fully supports these deposition policies and is compliant with them." UAlbany researchers should consider publishing in Chemistry Central Journal or similar iniatiatives. Why publish in open access journals? See: "The Research Impact of Open Access Journal Articles."
