InterNano

InterNano is a service of the National Nanofacturing Network. It contains resources concerned with "the applications, devices, metrology, and materials that support the commercial development and marketable applications of nanotechnology." It includes news, events, a directory of manufacturers, a taxonomy that leads to resources, a process database, and a digital repository for researchers and manufacturers.

Ionic Liquids: Virtual Special Issue

ACS Publications has compiled a Virtual Special Issue on Ionic Liquids. This Virtual Special Issue contains 57 articles from 13 American Chemical Society journals. The University at Albany community can access all these articles due to subscriptions, however, this issue is sponsored by The University of Alabama's Center for Green Manufacturing and its spin-out company 525 Solutions, Inc., and has been made freely accessible to all.

A List Apart

A List Apart is a free, online magazine that focuses on Web design and development with a special emphasis on Web standards and best practices. New content is added every Tuesday. Articles appear in these categories: code, content, culture, design, mobile, process, and user science. Source code is freely available.

Video Abstracts in New Journal of Physics

The New Journal of Physics, an open access journal jointly published by the Institute of Physics (UK) and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (Germany), now has video abstracts for some of its articles. New Journal of Physics covers all disciplines of physics including pure, applied, theoretical and experimental research. The video abstracts allow authors to "personally present the importance of their work." Articles with video abstracts are marked with a special symbol in the table of contents. The Abel Prize

The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has awarded The Abel Prize for 2011 to John Milnor, Professor of Mathematics at Stony Brook University (SUNY). "The Abel Prize recognizes contributions of extraordinary depth and influence to the mathematical sciences and has been awarded annually since 2003. It carries a cash award of NOK 6,000,000 (close to EUR 750,000 or USD 1,000,000)." Additional information is available here.

Bed Bug Information

Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius), not a pleasant topic. By now, most have heard about the resurgence of bed bugs around the world, and many know people who have experienced infestations. Many people, who are traveling or moving, may know about the Bed Bug Registry, a database where you can find reports about hotels and apartments in the U.S. and Canada. An excellent resource for finding information is Bed Bug Information from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It contains information on identifying, treating, and preventing infestations, as well as hiring a pest management professional and bed bug biology. Online Science Fair

In partnership with CERN, LEGO, National Geographic, and Scientific American, Google has launched an online science fair called Google Global Science Fair 2011. Young scientists from around the world who are 13 - 18 years-old and enrolled in a public or private school or home schooled are eligible. Students may enter as individuals or in teams of up to 3. Complete rules are available here. Entries may be submitted until April 4, 2010. The grand prize is a $50,000 scholarship. Although this is generous, come on Google, you're a billion dollar company!

APS Offers New Open Access Alternative

The American Physical Society (APS) is offering authors a new alternative for their Physical Review journals. That is, authors will pay an article processing fee and their manuscript (once accepted) will be available open access upon publication. These articles will be published under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License (CC-BY). The CC-BY License gives authors and others the right to copy, distribute, transmit, and adapt the work, provided that proper credit is given. Additional information is available here.
