A Comparison of SciFinder and Scopus I

When I'm asked by the Chemistry Department or the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) to provide citation metrics for a faculty member’s continuing appointment and/or promotion case, I usually run the search in two databases: SciFinder and Scopus. Web of Science is not considered because we do not have a subscription. I started using two databases because CNSE is a relatively young college (established in 2001) with a faculty that consists of scientists and engineers that have research proficiencies new to the university. I was simply not sure which database would generate the best results, and I thought I could find out by running a few searches and comparing the results. However, it wasn’t clear cut. Some of the results were startling and I decided to extend the "two database policy" to searches for the Department of Chemistry as well.

Although I began running the cited reference searches in two databases in 2008, I never had the time to analyze the results and find out why one database was better than the other. During the next few months, I will be revisiting some of the original searches that showed significant differences. I will run the search again, and if there are still significant differences in the results, I will try to determine the cause. I will be presenting some of the findings on this blog.

The first case involves

Strain dependent facet stabilization in selective-area heteroepitaxial growth of GaN nanostructures, Applied Physics Letters 87, 233108 (2005).

Scopus found 7 cited references and SciFinder found none. Scopus found citing articles in Physica Status Solidi C (2 articles), Journal of Crystal Growth, Journal of the Korean Physical Society, Journal of Physical Chemistry C, Physica E, and Journal of Applied Physics. SciFinder indexes all of these journals, in fact, all 7 cited references from Scopus are also in SciFinder. There is simply no link in SciFinder between the records of the 7 cited references and the record for Applied Physics Letters article. Furthermore, the full records for each of the 7 lists the Applied Physics Letter article in its "citations" list. Since there is no clear explanation of why this is happening, I will be contacting SciFinder for a clarification. If you can explain this, please comment below.

It's interesting to note that Google Scholar found 9 cited references for the APL article.

F1000 Journal Rankings

The F1000 Librarian Newsletter announced that the Faculty of 1000 will be launching their own journal ranking system. The announcement stated, "In the next couple of months, Faculty of 1000 will be launching F1000 Journal Rankings. These will be calculated using the F1000 Article Factor (FFa) and based on the opinion of our 10,000 strong faculty. This will deliver a new kind of metric, one based on the opinions of the most prestigious scientists in their field and one that is generated at the article level. With this new metric, F1000 aims to deliver a more accurate and up to date overview of STM journals. It will also be updated monthly and back dated to 2007." The rankings will be subscription-based; more information is here.

JCR vs. SCImago

Nature Publishing Group just announced that its flagship journal Nature has the highest journal Impact Factor (36.101) and has most citations (over 500,000), based on data from the recently published 2010 JCR. Journal Citation Reports (JCR) is published annually by Thomson Reuters and uses data from the 2 previous years. We no longer subscribe to the JCR, so I decided to look at SCImago Journal & Country Rank and see their journal rankings for 2010. SCImago Journal & Country Rank is a product of SCImago, a research group from the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), University of Granada, Extremadura, Carlos III (Madrid) and Alcalá de Henares. SCImago Journal & Country Rank is based on data from the Scopus database, for the 3 previous years. It is freely available. SCImago uses 2 measures to rank journal impact: SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) and H-Index.

The top 5 journals ranked by SJR are: 1. Annual Review of Immunology, 2. Nature Genetics, 3. Cell, 4. Ca-A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, and 5. Immunity. Nature is ranked 8th.

The top 5 journals ranked by H-Index are: 1. Nature, 2. Science, 3. New England Journal of Medicine, 4. Cell, and 5. PNAS.

The journals can be sorted and ranked by other fields. For example, the top 5 journals ranked by total citations are: 1. PNAS, 2. Nature, 3. Science, 4. Journal of the American Chemical Society, and 5. Journal of Biological Chemistry.

In 2009, the content of BRENDA has been substantially increased and these new features for the Web interface were implemented:

  • Increase in the number of manually curated literature: more than 10,000 new reference. The total amount of manually evaluated literature reaches now more than 97,000 enzyme-specific references.
  • Expansion of the search for metabolic pathways (e.g. KEGG, MetaCyc).
  • New ligand flatfile site enhances the ligand search (ligand-centric view as a complement to the enzyme-centric view of the enzyme flatfile site).
  • New SBML output for the construction of organism-specific biological models, e.g. metabolic networks, from BRENDA data.
  • Improvement of the enzyme-disease relationships by an enhanced disease mining approach which increases the number of literature references in this field by more than tenfold (now more than 400,000 references automatically annotated).
  • Search site for 3-D structure/PDB link now offers the possibility to display the active sites in the 3D structure of an enzyme.
  • New protein-specific enzyme search in the enzyme flatfile site, in addition to the organism-specific enzyme search.

New Titles in Minerva

What are the new titles recently cataloged in the Minerva catalog? One way to find out is to come the Science Library and peruse the "new book" shelves opposite the Circulation Desk on the first floor. Another way would be to use the Minverva catalog. Log into Minerva, and simply click the New Titles tab. This will provide you with all of the materials cataloged in the previous month. This list is divided by broad subjects. If you click on Q (science), R (medicine), S (agriculture), and T (technology), this will provide you with the new titles in the Science Library. The entire list as well as the individual broad subjects have RSS feeds. Paste the RSS feed URL into your RSS aggregator (Bloglines, Google, etc.), and the list will be automatically sent.

Deep Dyve: Rental Service for Research Articles

Don't laugh! Deep Dyve has launched a rental service for research articles in science, technology, and medicine. For as little as 99 cents, you can "rent" for 24 hours one of 30 million articles in the Deep Dyve database of thousands of journals. There's a small catch ... the article cannot be printed. Deep Dyve has other options: for $9.99 a month, you can download up to 20 articles and keep them for 7 days; these cannot be printed either. However, the premium plan, which costs $19.99 a month, allows you to print and download an unlimited number of articles. This deserves some serious consideration. A 14-day free trial is available here and more information is available here.

Online Journals from the New York State Library

The New York State Library (NYSL) has a growing collection of online journals in science. I've discovered several journals that NYSL provides access to, that UAlbany does not. For example, they provide access to the following journals from the American Scientific Publishers:

Journal of Nanoelectronics and Optoelectronics
Journal of Biobased Materials and Bioenergy
Journal of Biomedical Nanotechnology
Journal of Bionanoscience
Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology.

Also, Wind Energy from John Wiley & Sons.

You can find out what they have at this page http://ty7zv9nn5c.search.serialssolutions.com/, where you can search by title or browse alphabetically.

THE CATCH: In order to remotely access the online journals from the New York State Library (NYSL), you must be a registered borrower of the New York State Library, which provides you with a borrower's card, a borrower's number, and a PIN. UAlbany's NetID will NOT work. For more information on obtaining a NYSL borrower's card, please see http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/apply.htm. Anyone can access NYSL's online journals, if they are in the New York State Library.

Journal Prices

An article entitled "Serial Wars" by Lee C. Van Orsdel & Kathleen Born appears in the April 15, 2007 Library Journal. The authors survey the market, and found "for the second year in a row, academic libraries saw overall journal price increases just under 8%, U.S. titles rose 9% on average; non-U.S. titles were up 7.3%. The authors expect overall price increases to be in the seven to nine percent range again next year." The article is full of revealing information, including average prices for STM subjecs. Chemistry wins with the highest average price per title - $3,429. Other subject's average price per title are physics - $2,865; biology - $1,676; geology - $1,424; mathematics and computer science - $1,313; general science - $1,139. My guess is that this will translate into another budget reduction next year. Faculty and students should give serious thought to publishing in open access journals and other alternatives.

BioMedCentral Membership

Effective April 1, 2007, the contract between SUNY and BioMedCentral (BMC) will expire. The contract was negotiated by the SUNY Council on Access and Collections (SCAC), and supported by a two-year grant from the Joint Labor/Management Committee of United University Professions, the Governor’s Office of Employee Relations, and a subsidy from the SUNY University and Health Science Center Libraries. The contract enrolled all SUNY four-year colleges, and university and health science centers as BMC members. During the membership period which ran from April 2005 to March 2007, SUNY faculty and researchers were entitled to submit an unlimited number of research papers to BMC open access journals without incurring article processing fees. Instead, the cost was covered by a $12,500 per year membership fee. Forty-five articles were published under these terms yielding a cost per article of approximately $555.00.

The contract was not renewed because a change in the pricing model used by BMC would lead to significantly higher costs (over $1,200 per article) without any benefits for a consortial arrangement.

Please note that this will NOT affect our access to the journals on BioMedCentral.

Happy Anniversary Science Resources

Today marks the first anniversary of the Science Resources blog. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!

When I started out, I wasn't sure how it would go. Although I previously had a "what's new" Web page for new Web sites I added to my Internet resources pages, I wasn't sure if I would find enough to write about. This is blog entry numer 184; that's a blog entry every other day for the year, but who's counting. I think I found enough to write about. Hopefully, the readers have learned something, and I've provided a valuable service. I know I've learned a lot. If you have comments, questions, or suggestions, please use the "comments" feature.

What's in store for next year? Much of the same ... new or underutilized science resources. I also hope to do a site re-design or makeover to make the blog easy on the eyes.

What would help me as I head into year 2? A spell checker! Come on MoveableType, isn't that basic for a writing tool?

Citation Advantage of Open Access Articles

“Citation Advantage of Open Access Articles,? an article by Gunther Eysenbach published in the May 2006 issue of PLoS Biology, finds that articles published as an immediate open access (OA) article on a top journal site have higher impact than self-archived or otherwise openly accessible OA articles. The article finds strong evidence that, even in a journal that is widely available in research libraries, OA articles are more immediately recognized and cited by peers than non-OA articles published in the same journal. It concludes that OA is likely to benefit science by accelerating dissemination and uptake of research findings. From SPARC eNews.
