How to Deal With Unruly Patrons

• You need to only deal with unruly patrons in the reference area unless circulation or another area requests your help.

• It should be a team response with your colleague at the desk

• Identify yourself to the patron

• Ask them to “cease and desist” the behavior. Tell the “I am directing you to cease and desist in engaging in ________(the activity, such as foul language, cell phone use, etc.). If the behavior does not stop, you will be directed to leave the library.”

• If they do not stop, ask for their ID and photocopy it. If they refuse they are in
non-compliance with the University’s policy. Let them know you will be calling the UPD.

• If the behavior continues or you could not the patron’s ID or if the patron refuses to be in compliance with the rules or regulations, or you feel threatened by them, or upon request he or she will not leave the library, do not hesitate to call the University police for assistance.
