The New York Times Book Review

Now that we have a digital archive of the NY Times, I will be sending the NY Times Book Review volumes that are in the reference collection to storage. Our reference intern (Philip) and I have tested the database to make sure the contents of these volumes are retrievable in the database, and they are. Here are some tips for searching for items in the NY Times Book Review.

To find an individual book review:
1. Use Advanced Search
2. Enter "book review" in the first search field and select "section" as the field to search.
3. Enter the book title in quotes in the second search field and leave the field to search as the default of citation and document text.

This worked well for all the searches I did. Remember that many book reviews in the NYTBR have titles that are NOT the title of the book. Just click on the first result and that should be the book review you're looking for.

To page through an entire issue of the NYTBR:
1. Use Advanced Search
2. Enter "book review" in the first search field and select "section" as the field to search.
3. Enter the date of the issue of the NYTBR you're looking for in the "on this date" field.
4. Click on the first item in the results list. Then use the "previous" and "next" arrows to page through the issue.
