The New York Times Book Review

Now that we have a digital archive of the NY Times, I will be sending the NY Times Book Review volumes that are in the reference collection to storage. Our reference intern (Philip) and I have tested the database to make sure the contents of these volumes are retrievable in the database, and they are. Here are some tips for searching for items in the NY Times Book Review.

To find an individual book review:
1. Use Advanced Search
2. Enter "book review" in the first search field and select "section" as the field to search.
3. Enter the book title in quotes in the second search field and leave the field to search as the default of citation and document text.

This worked well for all the searches I did. Remember that many book reviews in the NYTBR have titles that are NOT the title of the book. Just click on the first result and that should be the book review you're looking for.

To page through an entire issue of the NYTBR:
1. Use Advanced Search
2. Enter "book review" in the first search field and select "section" as the field to search.
3. Enter the date of the issue of the NYTBR you're looking for in the "on this date" field.
4. Click on the first item in the results list. Then use the "previous" and "next" arrows to page through the issue.

APA Style Guide to Electronic References

The print copy of the APA Style Guide to Electronic References is here (in Ready Ref). It is a "revised and updated version of section 4.16 of the fifth edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association."

I have also ordered the electronic version of this guide, which is in pdf format. Once the order is complete, we will be able to post a link to the pdf anywhere on our Web site. All library patrons can use the online version, but printing is limited to faculty, students and staff. We will need to post a statment to that effect anywhere we provide the link.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Changes in Reference

Hi everyone,

I want to let you know about some changes in Reference. This week, the Ready Ref collection will be moved to the empty shelves at the beginning of the Reference Collection, except for the phone books. We will no longer provide print phonebooks, with the exception of one for the Capital District which will be at the Reference Desk.

Over the summer, the Ready Ref shelves and the 2 ranges of Reference shelves that are now empty as a result of a weeding project will be removed and carpet installed.

New database

Hi everyone,
We now have a subscription to the Reference Universe database. It's a master index to reference books. Users can search article titles and back-of-the-book indexes of subject encyclopedias and other reference works. For items owned by the University Libraries, it links to the full text of articles in e-books and Minerva records for print books.

Jane

Here's some information about searching Reference Universe from the Help file:

Reference Universe helps you find the right article--the authoritative article--to begin your research, whether it's on your shelves in a reference work or in an online reference database.
OK, what do I do first?

Simply type your term or phrase of interest in the search box and and click Submit this Search.
The Reference Universe search software presumes exact words or phrases unless you select other qualifiers, e.g., "any of the words." "word variants," etc.
While you are free to limit your search to terms in article titles or index terms only, it is recommend that you select the default "Keyword" search to facilitate the broadest search parameters.
What about wildcard searching?

Reference Universe supports wildcards, * [asterisk] for multiple characters and ? for single characters, e.g. automat* or Rom?
How does the checkbox "Restrict Search to Titles in your Library" work?

This feature only shows those titles which your owln library holds.
However, it is recommended initially that you view the entire hit results set first, to see how many works are published in your area of interest.
What happens then?

The Reference Universe displays the results of your search according to the Title of the reference work(s). Works are displayed in the following order:
• The Search term in the title of a Reference Work itself.
• The search term in the article tItles or Index of a Reference Work, in descending order based on the number of hits.
Hits can then be SORTED by date of publication and by title
What do I do now?

The system has verified that your local library holds this title.
Click on the Open Book icon to open up the bibliographic record in your own library's catalog for location information.
Other options from your search:

Clicking on the Title of the Work.
This function links to a wealth of data about this title including:
• Links to scholarly reviews of this work in ARBA Online, Book News Online and Choice Online (separate library subscription required.)
• Links to the publisher's site to learn more about availability, pricing and other options.
• Links to view the entire list of articles or the entire back-of-the-book index
• Links to view the material in MARC bibliographic format.
View Article Titles from your search.(See the list of article titles with your search term)
View Index Terms from your search(See the index terms, with precise volume and page numbers too!. )
View electronic editions of the title (subscriptions required for most titles.)
RU Hint: The icon only appears in listings of article titles or index terms, and links you directly to the article in e-form if your library subscribes to the electronic edition.
Can I see an entire list of article or index terms in a work?
Yes. To view the entire index of a work simply click on the underlined Title of the work and follow the link to "View Index for this title"
Can I save and export Reference Universe data?

Of course, here's how:
1. Identify the works by checking each box left of the titles.
2. Click "Save Checked Items"
3. Click "Display Saved Items"
4. Click "Download"
You can export citations in Brief, RefWorks or Endnotes formats.
Browsing Reference Universe:

If you are uncertain of a search term, or wish to simply scan the contents in a more detailed way, use the Browse feature. This permits you to explore Reference Universe by:
• Publisher
• Title
• Subject Headings
• Index or Article Terms
• Library of Congress Call Number
RU Hint:
While you may know the search term you wish to search on, don't hesitate to browse and search a variety of terms.
The value of Reference Universe is not simply to identify obvious titles, but also to reveal authoritative articles in works one might not consider initially. The serendipitous searches are often the most fruitful.

The State of Aging and Health in America Report 2007

Added to the statistics section of the Medicine & Health page

The State of Aging and Health in America Report 2007 [pdf]
http://apps.nccd.cdc.gov/saha/

Recently, the Center for Disease Control released the 2007 State of Aging and Health in America Report. It’s a valuable document for anyone with an interest in public health, gerontology, and other allied fields. This website contains the full text of the report, along with the 2004 report as well. Visitors will also appreciate the extra features offered here, which include state-based report cards that examine fifteen key indicators of older adult health, such as obesity rates, smoking habits, flu vaccine updates, and others. Obtaining these report cards is quite simple, as users just need to click on the state they are interested in. After doing so, they can examine the statistics for these fifteen indicators, and see how different states compare. Additionally, the site contains resources for journalists who wish to use these findings in various publications, and a general section titled “Using the Report”.

Government Views on Iraq

From the site: Iraq has been international front-page news for some time and this resource is a compilation of online primary resources to help fill in the background. The site concentrates on Government documents and information from the U.S. Executive Branch and while the bulk of the overall resources are primarily from the United States, there are international entries as well. Resources include such items as U.S. Congressional Hearings and Resolutions, Federal Agency reports, transcripts of press conferences and briefings, USAID Fact Sheets, legislation, news releases and Presidential Communications, as well as texts of United Nations Security Council Resolutions, the Geneva Conventions and Protcols, selected international treaties and information on governance post Saddam Hussein including regulations, memoranda, orders and public notices from the Coalition Provisional Authority as well as resources re the Iraqi national elections on 30 January 2005 and information re the Iraqi Transitional Government.

Book Review Digest Retrospective & Reference Standing Orders

HW Wilson is offering a new online database, Book Review Digest Retrospective, that covers the years 1905-1982. I would like to be able to purchase this (at the one time price). This online access is convenient for users and saves space in the reference collection. In order to finance the purchase, I plan to cancel the standing orders I had previously identified for the 3rd scenario in the budget cut reductions. These are things that are duplicated online, or unnecessary. I'm hoping that I can use the future year's savings for other things, such as a Testing & Education database that would have GMAT/LSAT/MCAT/prep etc.

CIS Index $4,255 - available in Lexis/Nexis
Facts on File $1,638 - available in Lexis/Nexis
Selected Rand Abstracts $1,895 - available online for free in pdf format

Deutsche Nationalbibliographie $3616 - new publications in German-speaking countries
OAG Flight Guide $615

Wikipedia

I have changed the annotation for Wikipedia on the Encyclopedias page of the online reference collection. Previously it was a blurb provided by Wikipedia, and consquently, offered no caveats about the dangers of using information from an encyclopedia where anyone may contribute.

The new annotation reads "Wikipedia is a Web-based, multi-language, free-content encyclopedia written collaboratively by volunteers and sponsored by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Users should remember that because anyone may contribute, the information provided may be incorrect, biased, or intentionally misleading. The University Libraries do not recommend using Wikipedia as a source for class assignments or papers."

Kay kindly shared an interesting blog entry in which a professor of English at UC Santa Barbara provides some guidelines on when it is okay for students to cite Wikipedia in their work:

Some professors might wish the Web site's name never turned up in students' papers, but Mr. Liu argues that Wikipedia can be a useful, if limited source:
"Wikipedia citation can be an appropriate convenience when the point being supported is minor, noncontroversial, or also supported by other evidence. In addition, Wikipedia is an appropriate source for some extremely recent topics (especially in popular culture or technology) for which it provides the sole or best available synthetic, analytical, or historical discussion."

But that should be about the extent of it, Mr. Liu suggests. Wikipedia should never be used as the primary source for information on "anything that is central to an argument, complex, or controversial," he says.

And he makes a good point about the ephemerality of the site: Since articles are continually contested and changed, citing a Wikipedia entry without noting the date on which it was viewed is "meaningless," he argues.

Budget Reduction FY07

The Provost has informed Frank that she cannot yet commit to any additional funding for the library next year. Because of inflation, the acquisitions budget will have a projected shortfall next year between $450,000 and $500,000. We are hopeful that the Provost will be able to provide these funds. If not. we will need to reduce acquistions expenditures. Mary Casserly has asked the bibliographers to plan for 3 scenarios: (1) a reduction of $300,000 (2) a reduction of $400,000 and (3) a reduction of $500,000.

For the reference collection, this translates to planning for reductions in expenditures of (1) $22,863 (2) $30,594 and (3) $38,106. Plans have to be submitted to Mary by April 28. I will be targeting resources that are duplicative, resources that we are still acquiring for the defunct German major and little used resources. I will post a list of my selections by mid April for review.
