Science Literacy is an important concept in today’s society. As Robert Hazen discusses, science is a large part of life. It is included in politics and even the simplest part of life that most take advantage of: beauty.
Every day new advances in science are reached. Recently genetic engineering and private flight into space have been big topics in the news. These topics will impact people’s lives in the future and it is important that people are able to understand what is happening. Scientific advancements help many people, and the average scientifically illiterate person, who could be helped by one of these advancements, may not be because he or she cannot understand what is going on.
Although many people do not believe it is important that they know the difference between DNA or RNA or why we have seasons, it is important. To say it is not important is to say it does not matter who is president. These things affect life every day and it is important to be informed. One does not need to know every little detail, as Hazen says, but they do need to have an idea of the overall topic. Understanding why we are here and why the universe works the way it does, can help in future ideas, theories, and innovations. Not everyone has to be a scientist to help advance science.
There are many problems that are leading to the end of the earth. It is important that people understand what is happening in science so that they can stop doing whatever it is that causes the destruction of this planet. To have a basic understanding of science, one can do many things and take simple small actions to help in the saving of a planet.
Science literacy is very important, and people need to start being more informed. The human brain can do so much more than humanity lets it. As it is often said, we only use 10% of our brain power and it is time people start using more.
