A Lecture by Eric Block, the Carla Rizzo Delray Distinguished Professor in the University at Albany Department of Chemistry

In commemoration of its 10th anniversary, the University at Albany Science Library invites you to a lecture by Eric Block, the Carla Rizzo Delray Distinguished Professor in the University at Albany Department of Chemistry:

Garlic and Other Alliums: The Lore and the Science

May 4, 2010, at 4 p.m. in the Science Library Standish Room.

Refreshments will be served.

Professor Block will speak about the science and lore of garlic, onions, and other species in the Allium genus, the subject of his newly published book. He has studied Allium chemistry for more than 30 years and has discovered numerous unusual compounds, many with striking biological activity, formed when these plants are cut or used in cooking. He will attempt to connect the historic discussion of alliums with our present day scientific understanding of these plants. Block has been a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellow and the recipient of a number of other awards. His research has been continually funded by the National Science Foundation for over 30 years. Professor Block received his Ph.D. from Harvard University, and has been a member of the University at Albany faculty since 1981.
