Rockefeller College's Victor Asal:
"Criminalizing the LGBTQ Community and the Long Arm of the Religious State"

Dr. Victor Asal will lead the next "Campus Conversations in Standish" with a presentation titled "Criminalizing the LGBTQ Community and the Long Arm of the Religious State" on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 from 12:35 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Patricia and J. Spencer Standish Board Room at the University at Albany's Science Library. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

Dr. Asal is Chair of the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs & Policy's Department of Public Administration, and Associate Professor of Political Science. Dr. Asal's discussion will address the state of the LGBTQ community on the international level and how it features prominently in global discourse. A policy examination will offer insight and context to the discussion. "Given all the challenges that face the LGBTQ community, this presentation will give us a useful analytical overview of why legal treatment of the LGBTQ community varies so much from country to country and what might impact this in the future," explains Dr. Asal, who is also a university expert on terrorism, discrimination, and political violence.

In December 2016, Professor Asal and Udi Sommer released a book titled Legal Path Dependence and the Long Arm of the Religious State: Sodomy Provisions and Gay Rights across Nations and over Time. Published by SUNY Press, the text examines legal and cultural traditions surrounding state regulation of LGBTQ communities. It also develops a Gay Rights Index used to assess these findings.

Professor Asal has received numerous awards and recognitions including the 2015 CQ Press Award for Teaching Innovation from the American Political Science Association.

Launched by the University at Albany Libraries in spring 2015, “Campus Conversations in Standish” are designed to spotlight University at Albany faculty research and expertise and to connect members of the campus community and beyond in an exchange of ideas and perspectives. “Campus Conversations in Standish” are free and open to the public. They are held in the Patricia and J. Spencer Standish Board Room on the third level of the University at Albany’s Science Library.
