University Libraries Launch “Stress Less Month”

By popular demand, the University Libraries will be expanding their end-of-semester “Stress Less” events into a full “Stress Less Month” for the fall 2017 semester. “Stress Less Month,” a series of activities and programs designed to combat student anxiety and fatigue, will run November 30 - December 19 and will take place at all three libraries.

This year’s schedule of events includes therapy dogs, a photo booth, and coffee breaks. A full listing can be found here: With fifteen different activities, the fall 2017 semester will include the Libraries’ largest “Stress Less” programming to-date.

"It's great to see more activities that help me stress less. The libraries listening to us about what we need is awesome,” says Cara McBride, a Criminal Justice major and member of the Class of 2018. “I love the coffee hours. It gives me a pick-me-up when I’m hard at work.”

The University Libraries first ran “Stress Less” final exams programming during the fall 2014 semester with “Stress Less UAlbany @ Your Libraries.”  “Stress Less” has grown over the course of the last three years, reaching hundreds of students in the process.

“When I started this campaign back in the fall of 2014, I had no idea that it would be become so successful,” says Amanda Lowe, Outreach & Marketing Librarian. “I'm really proud of where we are and where we can continue to take this in the future!”

For the second semester, the Dewey Graduate Library will host its own brand of “Stress Less Month” activities. A full listing can be found here:

"Like many graduate students, students on the downtown campus often work during the day while completing their graduate work on evenings and weekends,” says Cathy Dwyer, Director of Scholarly Communication and Head of the Dewey Graduate Library. “Providing ways for students to take a break and play with a puzzle, or have a cup of cocoa, or post an encouraging note to fellow students is a convenient and easy way to relieve this added pressure.”

Jizaya Gary, a Human Biology major and member of the Class of 2020, looked over the Dewey “Stress Less Month” calendar and quickly expressed interest in the aromatherapy stations. “I really need to do that,” Gary remarked.

“We’re thrilled to launch ‘Stress Less Month’,” says Rebecca Mugridge, Dean of University Libraries. “The University Libraries take great pride in our attention to student feedback. We’re happy to offer more end-of-semester programs to help the campus community perform well on finals.”
