The University Libraries will draw attention to the harms of censorship during Banned Books Week (September 23-29, 2018) with a number of programs and events.

On Monday, September 24, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., the University Libraries will hold a “Banned Books Read-Out” on the academic podium in front of the University Library. Members of the campus community are invited to read passages from their favorite banned books. For lists of challenged books, see: http://www.ala.org/bbooks/frequentlychallengedbooks.

In addition, a screening of the film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, will take place on Wednesday, September 26 at 5:30 p.m. in the University Library’s Cobb Room (B43). A conversation on censorship, Harry Potter, and banned books will follow.

These events coincide with Banned Books Week, an annual event that celebrates the freedom to read. Traditionally held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week is a way to bring together the book community at large-- everyone from authors, librarians, journalists, teachers, students, publishers, booksellers, and readers of every shape and size. Ultimately it is a celebration of people joining together to show their shared support of the freedom to be able to seek and express ideas, even if those same ideas are considered by some to be unorthodox or unpopular. Banned Books Week expands efforts across the country to eliminate the removal or restricted access to books, drawing attention to the harms of censorship.
