Personal Digital Archiving on Common Ground


Campus Conversations: Doctor Donghee Sinn

Donghee Sinn, PhD, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Information Studies will kick off the first “Campus Conversations in Standish” of the fall 2018 semester with a talk titled “Personal Digital Archiving on Common Ground.”

The event will take place on Wednesday, October 31, 2018, 12:35–1:30 p.m. in the Science Library’s Patricia and J. Spencer Standish Board Room. All are welcome. Complimentary refreshments will be provided.

Dr. Sinn's research focuses on digital and personal archiving, public memory, and the use of digital formatted primary sources. She earned her doctorate in library and information science from the University of Pittsburgh in 2007. She has published widely and teaches three different graduate courses.

“In this talk, I want to present some of the quantitative studies I have conducted to understand general patterns and trends of personal digital archiving practices,” explains Dr. Sinn. “While it is true that individuals have their unique methods, my research findings also suggest that there are some discernible patterns of information practices. Some challenges and factors that were identified from previous exploratory studies do not seem to be widely applied, while there are other factors that display significant associations with information practices.”

Launched by the University Libraries in spring 2015 and held two to three times per semester, “Campus Conversations in Standish” raise awareness of UAlbany faculty research and expertise, connecting members of the UAlbany community and beyond. “Campus Conversations in Standish” are free and open to the public, and are always held on selected Wednesdays, 12:35–1:30 p.m. in the Patricia and J. Spencer Standish Board Room on the third level of the Science Library.

Advance Open Access with the University Libraries

The University Libraries will be celebrating Open Access Week with a full-day event in the Science Library’s Patricia and J. Spencer Standish Board Room on Thursday, October 25, 9:15 am-3:15pm. The event is free and open to the public. A light breakfast and full lunch will be provided.

Open Access Week is an annual global event during which members of the academic and research communities come together to discuss how removing access barriers to scholarly output could transform the way scientific research is conducted in the future. Open Access Week in 2018 is October 22-28.

Nick Shockey, Director of Programs & Engagement at SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), will discuss ways to foster an open access culture on campus and SPARC’s efforts to promote and support advances in open access. Sebastian Karcher, Associate Director of the Qualitative Data Repository at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, will talk about his experience developing a data repository. Other programming will include a panel discussion with the UAlbany Provost’s Open Educational Resources (OER) Faculty Fellows, TED-style Scholars Archive updates, and a roundtable discussion of scholarly communication topics.

Therapy Dogs Return to University Libraries

The University Libraries will bring therapy dogs to the Science Library's atrium on Thursday, October 11, 2018, 12:30–2:00 pm. The program serves as an opportunity for students to take a break from studying for midterms.

A staple on college campuses during exam seasons, therapy dogs have developed a reputation for alleviating test anxiety. Recent studies indicate they also diminish feelings of depression and stress. [1]

“I look forward to the therapy dogs program each semester,” says Amanda Lowe, Outreach & Marketing Librarian. “I take great pride in this tradition. It's an event that brings the entire campus together.”

The program is free and open to all students, faculty, and staff.
